Smiling Shard was a simply outstanding two year old winning three Group One races across New Zealand and Australia.

When he won the Harness Jewels in 1:53.7 he became the fastest ever male performer in New Zealand – regardless of age!

As a three-year-old Smiling Shard and Dexter won the rich New Zealand Yearling Sales Series Open Final and the Northern Stakes. He narrowly missed becoming a double Australasian Breeders Crown champion finishing second in the Final.

In the ensuing two seasons the champion duo starred in the free-for-all ranks winning back-to-back Kaikoura Cups, the Ashburton Cup, running second in the Hunter Cup, Taylor Mile and the Franklin Cup and third in the NZ 4yo Jewels and the Interdominion Grand Final at Addington behind the champions Im Themightyquinn and Blacks A Fake.

His driver Dexter Dunn described him as “the most natural two-year-old I’ve driven. Beautifully gaited and a beautiful horse to drive” and went on to say “Of all the horses I’ve driven he’d have the biggest heart.”

Smiling Shard has a very unique pedigree being bred 3 x 3 to both Abercrombie and Blue Horizon, a grand-daughter of outstanding broodmare Shifting Sands, who in turn is a daughter of the blue hen Golden Miss.

This opens up a lot of possibilities for Smiling Shard as mares with doses of Golden Miss should prove very good match ups.

So mares by stallions such as Safely Kept, Rocknroll Hanover, Rustler Hanover, Red River Hanover, Mystical Prince, Americas Pastime, Jr Mint, etc are could be well suited to Smiling Shard.
